Well, if you notice that your computer is running at a slower speed than what it used to initially, here are a few steps to fix a slow running computer and increase its speed and performance.

You may not notice that your computer runs very slow or hangs when you try and run a lot of programs all at once, as soon as your PC boots. So the trick is, let all your applications open and then start working on the PC, once it boots.

Next, delete your cookies regularly and empty the recycle bin and temporary internet files on a weekly basis. This would remove all the excess junk that gets stored on your PC during surfing.

Try and keep as few items in the system tray as possible. The more the clutter, the less the speed and performance. You can organize the system tray icons by going to the start up menu in msconfig.

Try and keep the screen resolution at the lower end. The lesser it is, the better will be the speed of your PC.

During boot each and every font stored on your PC loads too, so if you have lots of fonts installed, there are chances of your computer slowing down drastically. Uninstall those fonts that you severely use. Before removing any, make sure they are not the system fonts.

Keep the C drive as empty as possible. Just load the windows on it. You can install the softwares on the other drives since windows uses the entire empty space in C drive as virtual memory when your Computer RAM is full.

Minimize the applications that are not being used. We can increase the amount of available RAM this way. When we minimize an application it indicates that it will not be utilized by the user right now. Therefore, the OS automatically makes the application use virtual memory and keeps minimum amount of the code in physical RAM.

Cleaning your registry at regular intervals also helps. For that you can download a registry cleaner from a trusted and a good website.

Also, defragment your hard drive and clean the unnecessary files and folders regularly. Do not allow the junk to collect on your machine.

Install a good antivirus and anti-spyware software. This software will identify and remove known viruses and spyware as well as help you identify safe websites and screen your downloads.

Spyware and malware can affect computer speed by using your computer resources for unauthorized tasks or even ruining other programs. Make sure your software is up to date and scan your computer often.

Last but not the least, keep your RAM upgraded. RAM is a place where your computer temporarily stores data for calculations. The more RAM your computer has, the bigger its capacity to do multiple tasks. Adding additional RAM can significantly increase your computer speed.
